Essential Tablet Manufacturing Processes

What do you understand by tablet manufacturing processes? What are the different types of processes which modern pharmaceutical industries have been following nowadays?

Tablet is a pharmaceutical dosage form and its manufacturing is not simple or easy. Tablet manufacturing processes are processes which involve the usage of right amount of active ingredients in every tablet. All ingredients are needed to be well-mixed and for this several kinds of processes are involved in the manufacturing.

Major tablet manufacturing processes include wet granulation and dry granulation. These processes will be discussed in details in this article.

Wet granulation

The process which is meant to use liquid binder to agglomerate the powdered mixture lightly is called as wet granulation. In order to avoid the situation of under wetting and over wetting, it is essential to concentrate on the amount of liquid used in the process. Moreover, over wetting can cause the granules to become too hard and under wetting cause too softening of granules.

It has been observed that rather than solvent-based systems, using aqueous solutions is more advantageous but it depends on the kind of drugs. Considering procedures of the wet granulation, the first procedure is to weigh and mix the active ingredient and excipeints. Liquid binder–adhesive s then added to the power blend and is mixed thoroughly to prepare wet granulate.

Aqueous preparations of natural gums like acacia, cornstarch, cellulose derivatives, etc are examples of binders. Screening the damp mass to form granules or pallets is another step followed by drying the granulation.

Dry granulation

The process of dry granulation is meant to create granules through light compaction of powder blend under low pressures. The formed compacts are then broken down to form granules also called as agglomerates. Dry granulation can be easily conducted on a tablet press with the use of slugging tooling over a roll press and is also called a roller compactor.

Diverse range of pressure is offered by dry granulation equipment and the process is much simple than wet granulation. Fine granules are produced in high percentage through the process and it needs the excipients or drugs with cohesive properties and dry binder to support the formation of granules easily.

After granulation of tablets, granule lubrication is the next process. The final lubrication step is meant to ensure the tableting blend doesn’t stick to the equipment during the process of tableting. And whatever be the process for tablet blending is used; the process of producing tablet by powder compaction is same. Hence, both the kinds of tablet blending processes play an essential role in the process of tablet manufacturing.
